A lot of people tend to spend more money than they earn. The best way to prevent doing this is simply by budgeting your money. The first and most important step to budgeting is writing down all of your expenses. Most people make out a budget for every paycheck or for every month. Write down what you spend for everything that month. Once you have an idea of how much you spend in a month, you can start to plan ahead and see what things take up most of your paycheck.

Separate the list into categories such as bills, luxuries, groceries, gas, etc. You will also want to write down you income. Put all of your necessary expenses, such as gas, bills, etc. at the top of the list. After you have done this, subtract all of your expenses from your monthly income. If you have money left over, you are doing great. If you have a negative number, you will need to go through your expenses and see which things can be taken off the list. For example, you find out you are spending hundreds of dollars eating out every month. Try to start eating at home instead. With a budget, you may find you are spending too much money on something you never think twice about.

Before you spend any money on entertainment or other things that are not necessary, calculate all of your necessities first and then you can use the left over money. Do not do this the other way around. Necessities come before anything else. You may also want to put any extra cash into savings.
